Plastics are strong, durable, and cost efficient. GMI Research expects the Vietnam Plastic Market will have a CAGR of 7.4% from 2023 to 2033. Producing plastics requires a multi-step process including compounding, molding, extruding, and finishing. Petrochemicals and biomass can be used as the feedstock. A complete knowledge of the chemistry and engineering of these processes is essential to producing high quality plastics. While a lot of focus has been on machinery, equipment, and capital, entrepreneurship and competitive advantages have hinged on the employees’ ability to understand chemistry, engineering, and the processes plastics go through from beginning to end. The following passages address the main use polymers and their raw materials.

Main Use Polymers

Durability, versatility and low cost make plastics suitable for numerous applications. For plastics and polymer manufacturers, understanding the various properties of the polymers and their resulting applications is crucial. Knowing the benefits of a polymer, for example PE and PP, helps to target applications in different industries.

PVC is a very tough and inexpensive plastic that is used in pipes and with window and floor coverings. It is also used in various kinds of wiring and in a variety of medical devices. By comparison, PS is a much lighter weight plastic that is usually used in disposable packaging, insulation, and CD and DVD cases.

ABS plastic is sturdy and has a very high level of impact resistance, and thus is used in a variety of mechanical devices. Likewise, PC plastic is extremely strong and very impact resistant. Thus, it is used in the same kinds of devices. PC plastic is also transparent, and thus is used in a variety of automobile and building components. PC Plastic is also used in eye glasses.

As with ABS plastic, PET is also very impact resistant, and thus is used in a variety of mechanical devices. Nylon, also like ABS plastic, has high impact resistance and strength, and thus is used in mechanical devices and components. PU is also very strong and impact resistant and is used a great deal in automobile components and other mechanical devices.

Like PS, PE and PVC plastics are relatively low cost, and thus are used a great deal in a variety of mechanical devices. Cost and strength also influence the types of plastics used in various mechanical devices.

Plastics Start with Raw Materials

Every plastic product starts with raw materials. Understanding these inputs can inform the sources and properties of different plastic products.

The most prevalent raw materials are petrochemicals. These are derived from crude oil and/or natural gas and are the raw materials for polyolefins (e.g. polyethylene and polypropylene) and PVC.

Plastic products can be altered by a variety of additives. The type of additive incorporated into a product determines the function of that product. Additives fall into various categories. Some color or modify the thermal stability of a plastic. Some, like flame retardants, offer additional functions.

A subset of biodegradable plastics can be produced from agricultural products like starch and cellulose. Polylactic acid, for example, can be produced from renewable resources.

Recycled materials are also input to the production of plastics. Post-consumer plastics are relatively easy to collect and process to produce new plastics.

Given the inputs outlined above, manufactured products can include plastics of various sources (fossil, renewable, and recycled) and compositions. Additives can be incorporated to further modify the final product.
